As a Realtor in this rugged economy, I’ve had to eliminate a lot of things from my life - like having my nails done, eating out and having my house cleaned just to name a few. But, there’s one thing I absolutely won’t give up and that’s my Pilates classes!
With my husband, Bill, being retired, with us losing over 40% of our 401K last year, and working in a real estate market that was down 15% from the previous year, we had to make some changes. However, the one constant in my life that I want to and need to continue is Pilates.
I don’t think I could have gotten through the last few years with my sanity in-check if it weren’t for Pilates. In fact, I’ve increased the number of Pilates classes I take to three, four, sometimes five times a week. It invigorates, relaxes and strengthens both my mind and body. Also, the bonds I’ve made with the instructors and other students have had such a positive influence on me. Every time I leave class I’m in a great mood and leave with a smile on my face ready to take on the day - even in this stressful business climate.
My husband, Bill, was first diagnosed with cancer in 2002. He has undergone 3 major surgeries since then. In February of 2009 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and during further testing they found out that his original cancer had returned and that it was inoperable this time. Facing not only the mental strain that the “C” word brings with it, but also Chemotherapy treatments, we decided that he should start taking Pilates to help him get in the best shape he could - physically and mentally - to take on this battle. After only a few sessions he is loving Pilates and totally understands why I’ve loved it for almost six years. I have no doubt that this will be a main part of his weekly routine even after the chemo treatments are completed
Finally, another thing that I love about Pilates is that it has no age barrier. Four of the six students in the toughest classes offered are in our 50’s. I never thought that at 53 I could still keep up with ladies in their 30’s at anything! I know I'll be doing Pilates for many, many years to come.
