Pilates has completely changed the way I look, the way I stand and the way I move. It also started a chain reaction of healthier living. From Pilates I started running and began playing tennis again.
I even got a fantastic new job as a vice president at a public relations firm, Thomas/Boyd Communications. No - I didn’t get the job because I did Pilates. But I do think the mind-body element of the exercise helped to sharpen my focus, energize my spirit and boost my confidence - and those things definitely contributed to me getting the job.
I first heard about Pilates six years ago from my daughter who was a dancer through high school and has since become a certified Pilates instructor. She asked for some group classes as a Christmas present. Once she started the classes she said it would be perfect for me as well.
Later that winter I saw an ad for Nelson Pilates, which to my surprise was just a few miles from my home. I decided to try a class. It’s funny - I can remember finding out before that first class that I needed to wear “form-fitting clothes” At that time I was about 15 pounds heavier and in nowhere near as good of shape as I am now. I remember thinking “This is the last thing I want to do.” I almost called it off. Instead I bit the bullet, took the class and, thanks in large part to the instructor, Kerri Nelson, Pilates has literally changed my life.
If you’re thinking about trying Pilates, all I can say is do it - but be patient, it is not a quick fix. If you stick with it and have a good instructor you will be able to do moves and exercises that you never thought would be physically possible to do.
And you’ll feel great. I celebrated my 50th birthday in June and feel better than I ever have in my life.
Has Pilates changed your life? Are you an instructor with a great client success story? We’d love to hear from you.
