Balanced Body Continues its Environmental Responsibility

Pilates manufacturing company further incorporates and utilizes Green practices in everyday aspects of business.

Sacramento, Calif., March 3, 2011 – Balanced Body®, the world’s largest Pilates company, continues to do its part to reduce its carbon footprint. For a second year in a row, Balanced Body was recognized with the 2010 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) award administered by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). In addition, Balanced Body successfully pushed for the installation of a 20-acre solar panel field at Depot Park, the business park where the company is located. Balanced Body worked with business-park owner, Dick Fisher, to ensure the energy-efficient environment became a reality. Because of the solar panel field, Balanced Body now runs on 40-percent solar energy.

“Balanced Body promotes healthy living through mindful movement so we want to extend that mindfulness to the environment,” said Ken Endelman, Balanced Body founder and chief executive officer. “We take such pride in our products and the fact that we are able to produce them responsibly and efficiently. It’s up to companies like ours to keep raising the “green” bar so that the Earth is a better place to live for future generations.”

WRAP provides an opportunity for California businesses and non-profit organizations to gain public recognition for their outstanding waste-reduction efforts and lets the community know the business takes waste reduction seriously.

A 2010 report from Atlas Disposal showed yet another example of Balanced Body’s waste reduction. The company sent approximately 74 percent of its generated waste to be recycled.

“Instead of sending 133 tons of waste to a landfill, we put it through our recycling program,” mentioned Endelman.

Balanced Body employs many other green practices like:

  • All plastic bags used are made from recyclable materials;
  • Large equipment ships in specially designed cardboard crates instead of wood or metal containers;
  • Specialized cutting and laminating technology maximizes lumber yield and minimizes waste;
  • Only sustainably harvested lumber is used for wood products (no tropical rainforest deforestation);
  • More than 50 skylights installed to dramatically increase the amount of natural light;
  • Replaced all light fixtures with new, more energy-efficient units;
