Our History

MAKING OF A REFORMER

Proud to be part of the Pilates community for over 45 years.

We were founded on the belief that movement changes lives. We grew from a one-man workshop, to where Balanced Body is today, by providing the best in equipment, customer service and education. We embody the California culture — laid back, innovative and very friendly. This is our story.

Our story starts here.

Our founder and CEO, Ken Endelman, started his career in 1976 as a designer/builder of custom furniture in Hollywood. Ken’s commitment to craftsmanship is still evident in Balanced Body equipment today.

One day, a customer who taught an exercise called Pilates, asked Ken to build her a better version of a Reformer. Never having heard of Pilates, Ken was intrigued. He studied Joseph Pilates’ original designs and consulted with other instructors on new features that would improve functionality. The result? A modern Reformer – and a new career for Ken.

Through the 1980s, Ken continued to refine Pilates equipment, working with early pioneers including Ron Fletcher, Eve Gentry, Carola Trier and Kathy Grant. This ongoing evolution continues today, keeping Balanced Body at the forefront of Pilates equipment design.

Advocating for the Pilates community

The more Ken continued his work, the more he understood the impact of the Pilates method on peoples’ lives. He became deeply connected with the Pilates community and his vision for Balanced Body be an advocate for this special community. Ken’s commitment to Pilates and the community was demonstrated when he took the lead in the Pilates trademark dispute, winning this landmark lawsuit that made the Pilates name freely available for everyone to use.
